How We Approach Brand Identity for Digital-First Companies

How We Approach Brand Identity for Digital-First Companies

A lot of brand identity work still gets designed for print-era assumptions — a logo mark that only works at one size, a color palette with no accessible pairing, typography licensed for marketing but not for a UI kit. None of that survives contact with an actual product.

Design the logo mark for a 16px favicon first. If it doesn't hold up that small, it won't hold up in a mobile nav bar, a browser tab, or a notification icon — all places your brand lives far more often than a hero banner.

Build the color system around contrast pairs, not just aesthetics. Every brand color needs a verified accessible pairing for text-on-background use before it goes into a design system — retrofitting this after launch is expensive.

Choose typography with a full weight range and web licensing. Marketing decks can use a beautiful display font. Product UI needs that font's regular, medium, and bold weights, hinted properly for screen rendering, and licensed for web use.

Design the brand system, not just the logo. Button states, empty states, error messaging tone, iconography style — these touch far more of the user's actual experience with your brand than the logo itself ever will.

A brand identity that's built with the product in mind from day one saves months of inconsistent patchwork later — and it's a large part of why we build brand and product design in the same process rather than handing off between disconnected teams.

At avokado, we've helped brands across e-commerce, travel, SaaS and marketplaces turn ideas like this into shipped products. If you're weighing a similar decision, get in touch at /contact/ and let's talk through your roadmap.
